SelfieLuis Sanchez Saturno was born in Caracas, Venezuela, and came to the United States when he was 13 years-old. He became interested in photography as a teen and has done it professionally since 1996. Most of his work is photojournalism. He works in Santa Fe, NM, for The Santa Fe New Mexican. The New Mexican nominated him for the Pulitzer Prize in 2004 for his work documenting heroin addicts in Española, NM. On his spare time he likes to shoot art photography. Almost as a way to step away completely from the rules of photojournalism. Most appealing to him is a technique known as painting with light. The images are created using a long exposure in a dark studio – as short as 30 seconds or as long as two minutes. While the shutter is open, a light source draws in shapes that appear to interact with the subject. In this images a sparkler was used. The images are part of an on going project entitled “Creative Spark.”
