Marenne Hoeksema, our cover artist, is a creative bookbinder based in the Netherlands. 6 years ago, in art school, she created her first book and fell in love with binding. Much of her work is centered around (re)imagination. She enjoys recycling materials like vinyl records, public transport tickets, computer parts, etc. She loves the challenge of thinking up new ways to use old bookbinding techniques in a modern way, thereby using technology like 3d printing and laser-cutting to aid her and open up a whole new spectrum of possibilities.
The book featured here is a Coptic bound notebook. The tread visible on the outside of the spine not only spells out a word but it is also the binding that holds the book together. In order to accomplish this, Marenne first created a signature-punching template. The flightpaths of the planes on the front and back cover were also embroidered by hand.
